October is Fair Trade Month! Fair trade is all about making products with respect to people and the environment. With handmade goods produced by artisans right here in our community, Loom is proud to adhere to the values of an ethical process with careful craft and fair payment. Here are some ways to celebrate the values of fair trade this month:
1. Get educated.
Learn more about what "fair trade" means and what requirements exist for products to be labeled as fair trade. Check out information from organizations dedicated to the cause, like Fair Trade USA, the Fair Trade Federation, and the World Fair Trade Organization, who all have great online resources.
2. Ask questions.
"Fair trade does what we assume all businesses do." - Nelson Mandela.
Think about the companies you already shop from. Look into their production lines (as much as you can) and ask how they treat their employees and the environment. See if you can find alternative, ethical businesses if you don't like the answers.
3. Find our Chicago business friends.
Did you know that Loom is listed as a business member of Chicago Fair Trade? Check out their full list to get to know some other fair trade companies based in the Chicago area specializing in a range of products from coffee to clothing.
This is a fun one, of course! There are so many fair trade companies with online shops to choose from. If you're stuck, Fair Trade USA and the Fair Trade Federation each have lists of their member businesses organized by product type to search through. Or, even when you're doing your routine grocery shopping, look out for fair trade logos on products like coffee and tea to add a positive impact to your cart!
Let your friends on social media know why fair trade is important to you! Share your great finds and purchases with the hashtag #fairmoments being used by Fair Trade USA to get the word out. Do you have any favorite Loom purchases? We'd love to see those photos, too, with the hashtag #woventogether.
